Big Sandy Community and Technical College campus libraries work hard to serve as a hub for providing academic and non-academic assistance to students. Types of assistance provided include food pantry bags (NEST bags), holiday presents, and the laptop program. This year the BSCTC libraries are partnering with faculty and staff to host their second annual present drive for students who might need help providing a holiday present for their children. Last year the present drive served over one hundred children, and we are getting close to serving one hundred children again. Judy Howell, Director of Library Services and ACE, stated that “it’s important for the College to meet all the needs of our students whether that be food, technology or presents for their children at this time of the year and our libraries enjoy providing this assistance to our students.”

Additionally, BSCTC libraries have been working closely with the NEST to provide students with free pantry food bags and food cards food cards (when available) daily since September 2020. Students can pick up one food pantry bag per week at any of our three library locations on the Pikeville, Prestonsburg, or Mayo campuses. During this time the libraries provided over 600 pantry bags to Big Sandy CTC students.

To meet the technological needs of our students, the library has received around 150 laptops that can be checked out and used by our students. The libraries knew from student reports that some students do not have internet at home. The library is now providing access to MiFi’s (free internet) for our students. This program was in partnership with Brandie Davis one of our English faculty members. Each year the library partners with a variety of departments, faculty, and staff to serve the needs of our students. It is the goal of the library to be the hub of our campuses and student life on campus.

Diwali is the five-day Festival of Lights, celebrated by millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains across the world.  The word Diwali comes from the Sanskrit word deepavali, meaning "rows of lighted lamps". Houses, shops and public places are decorated with small oil lamps called diyas.   Here are some library articles about this year's Diwali Festival, which began November 2 and continues through November 6. (Because the festival is based on lunar cycles, this year the biggest day of the festival is today, November 4.)

For South Asian people across the world, Diwali marks new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil. While celebrations look different from family to family, one feature is constant: setting out small lights that represent how light guides the way amid dark times. Find out more about the history and customs of Diwali here.

[a South Asian family with a mother, daughter, father, and son are shown lighting diyas for Diwali]For many, Diwali marks the beginning of the new year. It is observed by lighting rows of oil lamps and exchanging greeting cards, clothing and other gifts. Family bonds are strengthened and forgiveness sought.  Joyous festivities and parties abound. Melas, or fairs, are held in almost all Indian towns and villages. In the countryside, the mela includes a festive marketplace where farmers bring their produce to sell and clothing vendors have a heyday.

New Year's Celebrations in Different Places

This Diwali season shoppers can bring a little extra light to the kids of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital while supporting South Asian-owned businesses. GYFTING, an online marketplace for curated gift boxes, is releasing a limited-edition Diwali gift box, part of whose proceeds will go toward St. Jude research and treatment of childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Shoppers will also have an option to donate to St. Jude when they make their purchase.
