You will be asked to write a critical analysis essay on the novella.  Assume whoever is reading your paper has read the novella, so major plot summary is not needed.  In this essay, you are giving the reader a better understanding of some aspect of the story.  For example, what about the ideas of preservation related to the pickle dish and the main characters?  is Mattie a reliable voice in the framed story where he is driving the narrator?

There are several essays on the internet and in the library's databases pertaining to Ethan Frome.  If you use secondary sources, you must document them. 

• The primary source is Ethan Frome.   You must cite your analysis if you quote from the book.

• The secondary sources are the articles you use to support your points.

For your paper on a problem from Appalachian culture or the region, you will cite three external sources.    Only secondary sources are needed.    Make sure that you don't cite fiction (novels or short stories) even if they discuss the problem that you're discussing.  An example to avoid would be citing Hulu's Dopesick series, because it is a fictional portrayal of a real problem.  Instead find secondary sources which support your ideas in the essay.  We have several library databases which provide you with secondary sources.
