Reusing existing Open Educational Resources (OER) can save significant time and effort. The OPEN partners recommend TAACCCT grantees invest up-front time finding OER to reuse rather than starting development of new educational resources right away. A significant benefit of OER is that they provide source material to build your development efforts around. No need to invest development effort in creating something that already exists.

Developed by George Mason University and the Mason Publishing Group, the Mason OER Metafinder (MOM) (Links to an external site.) doesn't provide a single database for searching OER, but instead performs your search simultaneously across 22 sources of OER material. This federated search can increase discovery and prevents the need for updating a centralized database. The tool can be very useful for helping a faculty member who is looking for OER in a niche area of study or who has had difficulty searching in several of the major repositories.

Openly Available Sources Integrated Search (OASIS) (Links to an external site.), developed by SUNY Geneseo, is a search platform that aims to make discovery of open content easier. OASIS currently searches open content from 117 different sources and contains more than 440,000 records. Users can browse OASIS by subject (Links to an external site.) or by material types such as textbooks, audiobooks, videos, and interactive simulations. Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching (MERLOT) was started back in 1997 at Sonoma State University. It is a community of staff, volunteers, and members who work together in various ways to provide users of OER (Open Educational Resource) teaching and learning materials with a wealth of services and functions that can enhance their instructional experience.

Saylor Academy is a nonprofit initiative working since 2008 to offer free and open online courses to all who want to learn.
