Cultural Taxonomy

Use one of the following models to investigate the cultural dimensions. These dimensions can be used  to compare different countries.  Be sure to choose a country for this project that is very different from the United States.

Step 1: Select Your Country

This project requires creativity, imagination, analysis and problem solving.  Choose a country that is very different from the United States.  Use the cultural dimensions to determine the differences.

Step 2: Begin the Assignment

After you have selected your Host country, you are ready to begin your assignment.

Section 1: Introduce your imaginary student host, providing a name, age and brief description of the student's country and city/town. Make sure to document your sources.

Section 2: Select three cultural patterns on which to focus. Identify and provide a brief description of each selected pattern. Make sure to document your sources.

Section 3: Research, document and describe your own culture in relation to each cultural pattern selected in Section 2. Then do the same for your student host's culture using the same three selected cultural patterns. Make sure to document your sources.

Section 4: In this section, identify and describe potential miscommunications or issues between you and your student host in regards to the three cultural patterns selection in Section 2 and described in Section 3. Detail counter-measures to address these potential miscommunications or issues. In other words, identify a conflict and then describe how the two of you might work through the conflict. Don't just say we would talk it out!

Section 5: Discuss What you have learned from this project regarding how people from different cultures can overcome problems caused by differing communication patterns. Your written paper should be broken into categories of Sections 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Make sure to label them as such.
