Heirloom Seed Library
The purpose of the seed library is to collect, preserve, share and perpetuate heirloom seeds and their stories that are part of our local heritage. Non-heirloom seed donations will be accepted to be exchanged but will not be cataloged and preserved.
Membership is free and open to all

How Does the seed library work?
Visit the Seed Library located inside the Melissa M. Forsyth Library (Magoffin Building) on the Big Sandy Community and Technical College Campus in Prestonsburg.
- Complete a Contact Card to become a member of the seed library.
- To donate seed:
- Sign in on the clipboard with your name, the date, variety/number of seeds you are donating.
- Complete the required information on the seed envelope: Your name, the date, variety/approximate number of seed, county of origin and suggestions for growing
- Drop the envelope in the basket - library staff will process your information for the online catalog and insure that your seed is properly stored.
- To borrow seed:
- Sign in on the clipboard with your name, the date, variety/number of seeds you are borrowing.
- Locate your seed in the library and carefully measure out the number of seeds you are taking.
- Collect seeds after harvest and return them to the seed library.
Failure to return seeds that you have borrowed my result in loss of membership privileges to the seed library. In case of failed harvest, please report this to the seed library in order to maintain borrowing privileges.
