Prepare Your Information Before You Begin Your Resume

Before you begin your resume you should make a list of all of your activities, achievements and work experience. 

  • Make a current list of all professional experience. 
  • Make a list of any volunteer work.
  • List any awards or recognitions.

What Not to Do When Creating Resumes

What do you not do include on your resume:

  • Do not include personal information such as sex, race, marital status or religion.
  • Do not include the word resume anywhere on your resume.
  • Do not include a photo.
  • Do not include salary history.
  • Do not include why you left your last job. 
  • Do not use your current work email address as a contact. 
  • Make sure your email is a professional address.

Use Action Verbs in Resume

When writing your resume, use action words. Action words make your resume stronger. 

 

This is a list of action words to be used in your resume.

Templates Available in Microsoft Word

HINT:  In Microsoft Word, templates are available for resume design.

  1. Open Microsoft Word
  2. Type in resume in the box marked search for online templates.
  3. Choose a template.
  4. Click create.
  5. Complete the resume template paying close attention to your verbs and wording.  Should be grammatically correct and check spelling carefully.
