BIO 137 Human Anatomy & Physiology: Constructing and Understanding A Query

Working on Your Query

plan your query in a way that makes sense

write your concept outline or map

in a Word doc or on a piece of paper

[an outline with smoking as the main issue, with subtopics in lines beneath it, including causes, results, and ways to quit]

[a concept map with smoking as the main issue, with subtopics in bubbles around it, including causes, results, and ways to quit]

Why make this outline or map as your first step?

  • you have to know where you're going with this search
  • it provides additional keywords for searching in the databases
  • when you structure your final report, each section can become a part of your report
    • intro, body, conclusion paragraphs
    • reminds you want you wanted to discuss

Database suggestions

Medline will try to help you find search words for you to use!

Use them if they make sense in the query.

Other databases will assist you in the same way.  (It may look different, but they'll offer a way to find additional keywords.)

[a search box with "testosterone treatment" in the first box and Russia typed into the second box, producing a dropdown menu of choices related to Russia]

You can also add countries/regions/ethnicities to the end of search concepts.

[a search box with the word obesity, the Boolean operator AND in capitalized lettering, the word Appalachia]

Sometimes you can even use the Topic Finder tool to help you map out your query!

[a circular colored wheel of related keywords, including men and training, around the central theme of testosterone, where each individual piece produces search results]
