Profitt Religion 130: How to Write a Comparison Contrast Paper

Write the Thesis Statement

For this class you are being asked to write a comparison paper.  You will need to choose one or more of the 7 common denominators of the major world religions. The you will write a comparison paper addressing this common denominator in at least 5 of the religions under study in this course.

Step 1: Pick at least one or more of the 7 common denominators

Step 2: Make a list of concepts that make your chosen common denominator more alike in at least five of the major religions.

Step 3: Make a list of concepts that make your chosen common denominator more different in at least five of the major religions.

Step 4: You must decide whether the denominators more alike or more different in the five religions that you choose to explore.

Step 5: Based on this decision, you will write your thesis statement. The thesis statement should express your position. This means you should say whether you think the denominators are more alike or more different in each of the five religions.

How do you organize the paper?

Usually the first step is to organize the argument from the weakest point to the strongest point. Always end the paper with the strongest point.  After you get the argument organized, you can begin writing the draft of your paper.
